How to convert km/h to m/s

Converting km/h (speed in kilometers per hour) to m/s (meters per second) means that we are converting the units of a given speed from kilometers per hour to meters per second.

If you search for “km/h in m/s” on Google, a small window will appear above that will allow you to convert. But it will convert automatically, and in this article we will teach you how to do it manually.

How to convert km/h to m/s

The unit of speed expressed in kilometers and hours is expressed in km/h. Where 0 'km' represents kilometers and 'h' represents hours.

Since, m/s is the unit of speed expressed in meters and seconds, where 'm' represents meters and 's' represents seconds, which defines the number of meters traveled in one second.

Let's start by defining the formula: 1 (kilometer/hour) = 1000/3600 (meters/second)

  • 1 km = 1000 meters
  • 1 hour = 3600 seconds

So 1 km/h = 1000/3600 and simplifying that we're left with 5/18, and we can also simplify to 0,28 m/s

So, to convert km/h to m/s, we multiply the number we have by 5/18 ou 0,28 m / sec. That is, even if you use 0,28 m/s, the result will be the same.

Let's go to a small example below;

Car speed = 90 km/h

To convert the velocity to m/s, we multiply the velocity by 5/18 m/s.

So we have the speed of the car: 90 × 5/18 = 25 m/s

That is, a car traveling at 90 km per hour will cover a distance of 25 meters per second.

first exercise

A cyclist runs at a speed of 18 km/h. How many meters per second is the cyclist traveling?

To convert km/h to m/s, you need to convert the units of measurement.

Calculation: 18 km/hx (5/18) m/s = 5 m / s. Simply put: 18 x 5/18 = 5

That is, the cyclist is running at 5 m/s.

second exercise

A ball is moving at a speed of 9 km/h. How many meters per second does the ball travel?

Calculation: 9 km/h * (5/18) m/s = 2,5 m/s. Simply put: 9 x 5/18 = 2.5

In conclusion, the ball will travel at 2,5 m/s.

third exercise

A train travels at a speed of 162 km/h, how many meters will the train travel in 1 hour?

In this case, to solve the exercise we must apply the previous formula to find the m/s that the train travels in one hour.

Calculation: 162 x (5/18) m/s = 45 m/s.

Since the train travels at 45 m/s and we want to find out how many meters it travels in an hour, we must multiply 45 by 60 minutes and by 60 seconds:

45 m/s * 60 m * 60 s = 162.000 m/h

That is, in one hour, the train will travel 162.000 meters in total.
